Seasonal ocean predictions for west coast marine resource management

Seasonal (1-12 month) ocean forecasting has been identified as a priority for improving proactive management of fisheries and other marine resources. Along the U.S. west coast, progress in this area includes ocean and biogeochemistry prediction as well as application of ocean forecasts to forewarn of ocean extremes and ecological impacts. In this talk, we highlight recent efforts in the development and application of decision support tools, ranging from new high-resolution regional ocean forecasts to risk management tools aimed at reducing whale entanglements and bycatch of protected species. We also discuss coordination with management partners, which has built on relationships developed over many years, to ensure this information is presented in a way that facilitates its uptake.
